Novato council hopefuls raise $265,000

Council candidates in five Marin cities have raised a total of more than
$265,000 to win election contests on Tuesday's ballot, with most of the
money flowing into a big-spending race in Novato.
Three Novato candidates alone have raised $152,000 in their bids for a City
Council seat, with developer Jim Leland contributing $48,800 to his own
campaign and raising $15,000 more from donors. Incumbent Pat Eklund is close
behind with a $52,000 war chest, and Annan Paterson has $36,000. Candidates
Gail Meyers and Eleanor Sluis reported raising less than $1,000 each.
In the other city council contests on the ballot - Fairfax, Mill Valley,
San Anselmo and Tiburon - candidates raised a total of $113,000, with the
biggest spenders in Mill Valley.
Finance reports detailing money that had flowed into campaigns as of
Thursday are on file at local city halls.
- In Mill Valley, three candidates reported raising a total of more than
$40,300. Andy Berman reported a $15,900 war chest, while Shawn Marshall
reported collecting $13,800 and Kenneth Wachtel reported $10,400.
- In Fairfax, seven candidates have raised more than $35,000, with veteran
Councilman Frank Egger leading the pack with $10,700. Challenger Mary Ann
Maggiore followed with $9,600. Other Fairfax candidates trailed in fundraising,
with incumbent Mike Ghiringhelli reporting a $4,600 fund; incumbent Susan
Brandborg, $4,300; Penny Clark, $4,275; and David Weinsoff, $2,200. Candidate
Bill Madsen is not accepting donations.
- In Tiburon, four candidates reported a total of about $22,700 in contributions,
with incumbent Alice Fredericks leading with an $8,275 fund. Other totals:
incumbent Tom Gram, $5,600; incumbent Miles Berger, $3,550, and Emmett O'Donnell,
$5,300.
- In San Anselmo, five candidates have raised more than $17,500. Mayor
Peter Breen has $8,000. Other totals: Ted Freeman, $5,000; Ian Roth, $3,500;
Ford Greene, $470; and Luzja Mehling, $650.
